What about a Wilson Mariner candidacy?

Here's today's question:

What's the general feeling about whether or not Dan Wilson would be a good candidate for any of the jobs the Mariners are likely to have open this off-season - manager, coach, assistant GM or even general manager?

Wilson, a catcher for a decade with the Mariners, is a long time fan favorite in Seattle, a smart guy and someone who wants some sort of long-term career in baseball.

Should it be in Seattle? Should it be in uniform or in the front office?

I talked to Wilson about this before Tuesday's game and will have his answers for you in my daily notebook later. But I'm just curious as to what readers of the blog think.

Dan Wilson has always been my favorite Mariner. The city and the team would be lucky to have him. Dan played his heart out for the M's for ten years and he and has family have been wonderful role models in the community, especially through their involvement with First Place School. I would love to see the M's show some loyalty to Dan who would, in turn, continue to be an asset to the Mariners organization.

Dan Wilson in a Mariner uniform would be great for the franchise! Right now I don't know if he would be the one I would hand the reins to for the manager spot for next year but only because he has not done it in the past. With that said a catcher does have a unique insight on the game that others do not and he may be the one that could really put things together. Maybe even make all on the team play like a team instead of a few doing what they want to do. Perhaps, if a few of the players would be sent packing elsewhere he could do it. As a GM? Don't know. He is a smart guy and deserves a shot at something, but I think the upper management regime will go with someone with more experience at that level or someone that has been an assistant GM. Of course that really worked out well with the last one didn't it?
All I know is Dan is a "Mariner". He would give it all to do the best he could in any area the team might give him.

I wish that he could teach Johjima how to block the plate. Johjima seems to be afraid of getting hit whereas Wilson would guard the plate with his life.

Try him out as bench coach next year under the new manager.

Often times, catchers do make fine managers. They kind of manage from behind the plate anyway. I'd sure give him a real look as a bench coach. He doesn't have the bona fides to be the manager yet. Let him pay some dues first. I'd like to see Jay Buhner doing some head knocking too. Make him the bench coach or something. Base coach. Dean of Boys or something. Our leaderless clubhouse needs a role model.

Dan Wilson is most definitely the most overrated Mariner of all time and has no qualification to be a GM or Manager and with his warning track power, he isn't a good candidate for hitting coach. Maybe bullpen catcher but that is about it. If you are searching for ex-Mariners to fill holes, the only logical choice would be Edgar for hitting coach. Beyond that is it a recipe for failure.

I'd interview him with one question.

"Dan, would you play Jose Vidro at DH and bat him third?"

Whatever it takes to get him OUT of the broadcast booth -- he has absolutely NO personality, change of vocal inflectoin or presence. He may be an okay coach but he is not a broadcaster.

I LOVE Danny and would love to see him back as bullpen coach, bench coach, pitching coach, or maybe even manager once he has more experience. I think he's got great leadership skills and could contribute a lot to the team.

Wow, everyone certainly has a strong opinion on this, one way or the other. I love Dan, and would like him to be involved, but to what extent I don't know.

He would need a refresher course on coaching, perhaps start off as a bench coach like Mike Scioscia.

I think Dan Wilson would be a great candidate for some role in the Mariners, but I do recall reading not too long ago that, like Edgar, He doesn't want to be away from his family and business for such extended time periods. I could be wrong though

I can see coaching, but start him off easily, like bench coach or 1st/3rd base coach (even though he wasn't a good runner, I remember him being a smart runner). I think people still look back at 1995 very fondly and a utopian coaching staff would consist of many of those guys: Edgar for hitting, Jay for outfield (and khutzpah), Griffey in some capacity, and I think Dan would fit in somewhere as well.

Since Mac was made manager last year I have advocated that Jay Buhner should be the Bench Coach. In a position that is basically the liaison between the manager and the players, I think Bone is someone that has the cojones and chops to be able to light a fire under the underperforming keisters of our players.

Dan as GM? Well, he certainly couldn't come close to doing as poorly as Bavasi.

It appears he is getting a tryout as a broadcaster. He's better than Blowers. I think he understands the game. Like Niehaus, he is better on radio than TV.

Buhner sould be brought in to teach Sexson how to strike out less often.

¡Dan sería una gran adición a los Marinos! Remember who brought Dan to the M's?

Dan was a great player and role-model off the field. However he shouldn't be hired for any front office position or as the manager. He fits in best as the bench coach because he knows the game and would be an excellent liaison between the coaches and players. Who knows if Dan is ready though, I am all for bringing him back but if there is a better or more qualified choice that person should be hired. If Dan is hired I will wonder if the Mariners are unable to look towards the future and are unwilling to let go of the past. I say hire Dan if he's a good fit, but when he's back in uniform he'll have to prove it to me like anyone else would.

Another guy from '95 is Luis Sojo who would be the best choice of players from that year to become the manager.

Regardless of his qualifications, this org needs to go outside of the org for leadership positions.

Dan Wilson never blocked the plate once in his career. He was the master of stepping up to any throw and then leaning back to attempt the sweep tag. Wilson is a very nice guy and had a decent little career. However, he hasn't attempted to manage nor has he shown any ability to lead. Managers have to manage personalities as much as in game tactics and I've seen no evidence of that in Dan.

One name worth considering is Joey Cora. He's been a bench coach for a number of years, and he's shown that he's willing to put in the time to learn the game from the bench.

Are you on crack? Dan was one of the best in the majors at blocking the plate during his career.

Riggleman's going to get the job. He's got a career 44 winning percentage. I mean, he's OBVIOUSLY the guy, right? The M's will go on a micro-run to end the year and infuse the FO with ill-placed faith in what they thought was going to be a good product to begin the season. There are going to be no major changes. The next GM will be a tool like Bavasi was. This FO will never recognize the err of their ways. There will be no GM or Managerial candidate with any sort of integrity or personality as long as Armstrong and Lincoln remain in place. It was made crystal clear to me last week when Armstrong said "we want to win as many games this season as possible." NO!!!!!!!!!!!! That is NOT the philosophy we need. The philosophy we need is to make sure we win as many games as we can NEXT SEASON, and in years beyond. True baseball fans in Seattle are DOOMED.

You dont want Wilson cause he didnt block the plate but you would take Cora who was an absolute butcher at second base?

I'd like to see Dan Wilson come back in some capacity with the M's. He was a very smart player and he made all the Mariner pitchers better (hope Jojima is listening). Dan had a commitment to the game and the team and I'd like to see him come back, probably initially as bench coach.

#143615

Posted by Hank72 at 6/25/08 3:45 p.m.

I think Dan Wilson would make a good coach in MLB. However as long as the M's organization have Lincoln and Armstrong things will remain the same. They are not people who seem to embrace change very well. They like guys who are loyal and won't rock the boat. The end result will be precisely what Slab explained. For some reason Armstrong and Lincoln love the status quo.

Some asked earlier maybe Sexson could use some batting tips from Buhner. I think Edgar Martinez would make an excellent bench or hitting coach. The man was one of the best at what he did. Hit!

the mariners need to bring edgar has manger nolan ryan has pitching coach jay buhner has hitting coach and dan wilson has 1st base coach

I think Dan Wilson would be a good manager. Maybe some time as a bench coach first. Lee Elia could go back to part time coaching..he wanted to retire anyway. And Wilson could come in as bench coach. All assuming that Riggleman would agree to that.

#144018

Posted by faithful at 6/26/08 7:11 a.m.

Dan should make a good manager although we have no evidence as to his ability to motivate/challenge/discipline players. He doesn't belong in the broadcast booth but neither does Dave Sims who is brutal as a baseball announcer.

#144170

Posted by CowboysP at 6/26/08 12:14 p.m.

If you make Dan Wilson the manager, the fans would get immediate optimism. They would be excited as the M's fans love him, and consider him one of them. The attendance would hold, or maybe even go up. I don't know what makes him a candidate, except for that he brings back memories of the rare playoff teams. To me, I remember that the M's kept him, and traded Jason Varitek, who is still playing and has won two world series.

Dan Wilson would seem to have good skills to be a bench coach, and possibly a manager in the future.

As long as he keeps his christianity to himself and doesn't try to push it on his players, he would be a good managerial candidate. And so far he does not seem to be a pushy christian. So ok with me.

I feel Dan is to nice a guy to manage, We all know what happens to nice guys. I say give Riggleman a chance he's managed in the past. The M's are winning some games and may-be the players will catch on. I feel that Edgar might have the talent as a batting coach and Buhner would be a good bench coach. One item they need to address, Get rid of sexson and let cario play first! Sexsons like watching paint dry. I feel Cario would out perform Sexson in the long run.
