Travel writers are prepared when they hit the road

POST-INTELLIGENCER NEWS SERVICES

One veteran travel writer says when she is on a trip, there are three things she always carries (in addition to credit cards):

  • A photocopy of the opening page of her passport, which she carries separate from her passport.

  • A minuscule screwdriver designed to repair sunglasses or eyeglasses.

  • A corkscrew.

A poll of its members by the Society of American Travel Writers turned out this list of essential items:

  • Good walking shoes

  • Plastic zip-lock bags

  • Immodium (the most widely recommended antidote to diarrhea)

  • Photocopies of prescriptions for medicines and eyeglasses you can't do without

  • A Swiss Army knife (the ubiquitous do-it-all tool)

  • A pocket flashlight

  • Spare camera batteries

  • Your address book

  • Photocopies of all credit cards (carry them with the copy of the page from your passport)

  • Converter plugs for various power outlets

  • Band-Aids

  • Dental floss
