Two brothers armed with a knife and consumed by a simmering rage, as prosecutors described it, were charged with second-degree murder yesterday in the stabbing and beating death of a man slain in front of his wife and five children.

King County prosecutors have requested bail of $500,000 each for Edgar Anaya, 17, and his brother, Sergio, 20, both of Auburn.

They are accused of killing Antonio Moreno, 36, who suffered multiple stab wounds, including one that "destroyed his heart," according to court papers. Some were inflicted with such force that they severed Moreno's ribs.

Court papers gave this account of Moreno's death:

On Aug. 22, Moreno, his wife and his family attended a coming-of-age party at a hall in West Seattle. Around 1 a.m., as the party ended, a disturbance broke out between young men in two rival gangs.

The young men, including Edgar and Sergio Anaya, were separated and the fight ended.

The brothers left the party with three young women, and they were traveling well over the speed limit as they drove away, witnesses said.

At one point, they pulled behind a much slower 1969 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Moreno and carrying his wife and children.

The brothers, already angry about the disturbance at the hall, grew increasingly impatient when Moreno would not speed up, according to the three young women riding with them.

Sergio Anaya, who was driving, suddenly swerved and tried to pass the Moreno family. As he sped by, he ran into the passenger side of the Suburban.

But rather than stop to exchange information, Anaya drove off.

Moreno followed to try to get a license plate number, but he didn't catch up with the car, which hit a street sign, until he got to Southwest Holden Way and Delridge Way South.

Moreno got out to talk to the brothers, and a witness later told police he saw Edgar Anaya rush Moreno and knock him to the ground. The two then repeatedly punched and kicked Moreno, and Edgar finally stabbed him.

A police officer found Edgar Anaya hiding under a car in the 9200 block of 20th Avenue Southwest. He had blood spatters on his face and on his shirt, pants and shoes.

Edgar Anaya admitted he had stabbed Moreno after a fight erupted between the man and his brother.
