If you're visiting, check out these spots:

  • Teen Life Center opened in September after several years of planning in the former Garfield Community Center. The center will be run by teenagers, with some adult oversight, and will offer classes in job skills, conflict resolution and leadership skills. It also will offer teen health services. Information or donation: Reco Bembry at 206-684-7136.

  • Langston Hughes Cultural Arts Center, 104 17th Ave. S., has been spruced up and is busier than ever, offering youth and adult classes from dance to acting. The African Harvest Festival, Chipupugwendere, will be at the center Nov. 7-9, featuring traditional African food, live entertainment, arts and crafts and workshops in dance and drum. 206-684-4757.

  • Ms. Helen's Soul Food Restaurant offers the best in Southern cooking, from barbecue ribs to fried catfish, homemade sausage and sweet potato pie. For the hungry, try the Mount St. Helen's burger topped with hot links, bacon and egg. The restaurant is at 1133 23rd Ave. Hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

  • Knudsen Park is a charming formal garden seven steps above the street at the corner of East Harrison Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way. Designed by landscape architect Glenn Takagi, the park is privately maintained but open to the public.

  • Starbucks at 23rd Avenue and South Jackson Street offers live jazz performances from 8-10 p.m. every Friday and Saturday. Go early unless you are willing to stand.
