The Hiram M. Chittenden Locks are south of Shilshole Marina. Boaters with moorage in Lake Union and Lake Washington often wait to use the locks to pass through after boating around Puget Sound. Initial construction of the locks was photographed in 1912, above.

A Gorst flying boat was towed into the locks in 1935. The plane was en route to the Gorst plant on Lake Union for an overhaul after a summer of service in Alaska.
