Shilshole/Sunset Hill
Things to do while you're here
- Shilshole Bay Marina -- The second-largest marina in the state, Shilshole Bay Marina has moorage for 1,500 boats and is a beehive of marine activity. There's a vibrant community of liveaboard boaters, commercial enterprises and a fishing and crabbing pier for the public. It's at 7001 Seaview Ave. N.W.
- Golden Gardens Park -- This 95-acre park, a favorite with kite fliers and sunset watchers, abuts the north end of Shilshole Bay Marina and features views of the Olympic Mountains from the park's beach. Open 4 a.m. to 11 p.m.
- Hiram M. Chittenden Locks -- The locks, which let boaters pass between Puget Sound and Lake Union and Lake Washington, are a favorite spot for boat watchers. There also are facilities for viewing fish runs that pass by the locks, operated by the Army Corps of Engineers. The visitor center, at 3015 N.W. 54th St., opens from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Monday; it closes Tuesday and Wednesday. The adjoining gardens open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
- Sunset Hill Viewpoint Park -- The views of Puget Sound, the Olympic Mountains and Shilshole Marina are spectacular from this steep bluff. When the crowd at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks becomes oppressive, head north on 34th Avenue. It is spectacular at sunset. It's at Northwest 75th Street and 34th Avenue Northwest and opens from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m.
- Nordic Heritage Museum -- This 18-year-old museum, at 3012 N.W. 67th St., features permanent and traveling exhibits. Visitors are offered a unique perspective on the immigrant experience. And it's the place for Nordic language classes and performing arts, crafts and heritage programs. Open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission: adults, $4. Seniors and college students, $3. Kindergartners through 12th-graders, $2. Five or younger, free.
