In Washington state, more people work in agriculture than in any other industry. Yet less than 2 percent of our population actually work on farms. Each farm creates jobs for 11 other people. They might manufacture tractors, make jelly, stock the produce section of a grocery store, make loans, invent new ways to kill bugs, cook at a restaurant, drive a truck, or load freighters with fruit bound for other countries. All told, Washington's "agri-business" industry represents $29 billion, or one fifth of our state's economy. Agri-business generates more money than any other industry except aerospace.
