Bug guidebooks

Exploring bugs and butterflies is sort of like visiting Europe: You get more out of it with a guidebook.

Here are recommended editions available at local bookstores. Experts also recommend the University Book Store, Elliott Bay Books, REI and Metsker Maps for materials.

  • Golden Guides "Butterflies and Moths" and "Insects" (Golden Press, 160 pages, $6). These two are inexpensive, easy to carry and geared to children.

  • "Simon & Schuster's Guide to Insects," by Ross Arnett (Simon & Schuster, 511 pages, $15).

  • "Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Butterflies," by Robert M. Pyle (Alfred A. Knopf, 864 pages, $19).

  • "Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Insects and Spiders," by Lorus Milne (Alfred A. Knopf, 1,008 pages, $19).

  • "Peterson's Field Guide to the Insects of America North of Mexico," by Donald J. Borror (Houghton Mifflin, $15.95).

  • "Peterson's Field Guide to Western Butterflies," by J.W. Tilden (Houghton Mifflin, 466 pages, $18.95).

  • "A Field Guide to the Slug," by David George Gordon (Sasquatch Books, 48 pages, $6.95).
