Reader reactions to this series
Originally published Sunday, March 8, 1998 Unprofessional action deserves to be censured by community
And yet, just as in the case of the OK Boys Ranch, the professional societies of counselors, social workers, psychologists and psychiatrists, remain silent. Their failure to censure such unprofessional actions reflect their longstanding tradition of tolerance for any form of therapy done on the basis of "good intentions," while sound scientific guidelines, ethical principles and common sense are ignored. Professionals in the mental health field are unable to regulate themselves. Despite the lessons that should have been learned from the OK Boys Ranch, taxes have continued to pay the salaries of incompetent and unethical CPS workers. As our taxes once again go to pay for millions of dollars in damages to more victims, perhaps we should think not only about investigating CPS, but also about investigating the education and training required before counselors can be licensed to take people's lives into their hands.
