Reader reactions to this series
Originally published Sunday, March 8, 1998 P-I late to point fingers of blame for travesty of justice
The media's job is to be a watchdog, not a lapdog. At the time of the original prosecutions, those of us familiar with real journalism, such as the reporting of Dorothy Rabinowitz in The Wall Street Journal, or the small library of books on the witch hunts that preceded Wenatchee, saw all the indications of another case of child sex abuse hysteria in the making. Many of us, including this letter writer, were on an Internet mailing list, dedicated to publicizing this and other such abuses. I can attest from firsthand experience that efforts to get Washington media -- P-I included -- went virtually nowhere, despite abundant precedent for casting a skeptical eye on the allegations. Now along comes the P-I preening like a candidate for the next Pulitzer. It won't wash.
