Reader reactions to this series
Originally published Sunday, March 8, 1998 Excellent reporting not afraid to gore sacred cows
Your reporters are to be congratulated for an outstanding report that will allow the fresh air to blow this stench out of our state -- after taxpayers get hit with the bill. The guilty should be punished and the heros rewarded. But we need corrective measures so that the chances it can happen again are diminished. Hearings held by politicians will, I hope, result in meaningful changes instead of campaign issues. Washington state is known the world over for its high-tech industry and yet interviews held with victims, suspects and witnesses were hand-written and then, in some instances, destroyed. In the spirit of proposing useful solutions, we suggest that the state's lawmakers follow the example of Minnesota and legislate the use of video cameras to record every single interview between police and witnesses, suspects in every jail in the state, in all situations. That protects law enforcement and citizens. In many ways the story makes our state look as though it just fell off the back of the truck. Let's bring our public institutions into the 20th century.
