Reader reactions to this series
Originally published P-I unfair to ACLU's efforts to respond to abuse problems
The ACLU has done significant work in response to problems raised by the Wenatchee prosecutions. Since attorney Kathryn Lyon already was preparing an in-depth report of what had happened, we determined early-on that the most important contribution we could make was to push for policy changes to prevent such abuses from happening again. To that end, we made numerous efforts to obtain government documents, examined trial transcripts, and studied the government policies that failed to protect children. The result was a detailed report, "When Child Protection Investigations Harm Children," which is available on our Web site at www.aclu-wa.org. It identifies eight major areas of due process abuses by police and Department of Social and Health Services officials and proposes concrete steps to prevent such abuses in the future. Perhaps this work isn't glamorous, but we believe it's essential. The ACLU consciously chose to undertake a thoughtful examination of issues and provide credible recommendations. We did invite a P-I reporter to come to our office to review files detailing our efforts, but this offer was declined. For The P-I to dismiss our efforts as "timid" and to write off our report as a "rehash" not worthy of further comment is neither accurate nor fair.
